COURSE OVERVIEW
We invite you to enroll in theUCSF Advanced Videoscopic Surgery
Training Course. This 2 1/2 day hands-on course is part of a comprehensive
laparoscopy program offered by the Department of Surgery at the University
of California, San Francisco. The faculty includes
expert laparoscopic surgeons from UCSF and other major medical centers.
Among the advanced courses, this one is unique in its approach to teaching
thefundamental and special skills necessary for performing a wide variety
of new laparoscopic procedures. By fundamentals we mean suturing, knot tying,
and the use of complex new equipment. By special skills, we are referring
to the steps specific to the operations listed, including the technical
pitfalls.
Emphasis is placed on Nissen fundoplication, colectomy, inguinal hernia
repair, and common duct exploration. Appendectomy, spenectomy, adrenalectomy
and other laparoscopic procedures are also covered. A personalized apprch
is an integral part of the curriculum and provides a possibility for participants
to learn techniques specific to their practice needs. We employ state-of-the-art
teaching systems and distribute illustrative videotapes of human operations
and a comprehensive syllabus.
A unique and important feature is that graduates of this course are accorded
an opportunity th return later at a date of their choosing in order to practice
laparoscopic procedures again before performing them in humans. We also
arrange for graduates to observe laparoscopic cases at UCSF. As our syllabus
is updated with new information, participants in previous courses are sent
the new version for further study. We recognize that one 2 1/2 day effort
may not satisfy all your training needs, so we remain in touch indefinitely
as a resource whenever you want more experience or advice.
