The Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass Procedure

There are several approaches to the Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric Bypass procedure. This method described below is that of Dr. Phillip Schauer, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). This method is a retrocolic-retrogastric limb placement with a linear stapled gastrojejunostomy. Other variants include forming the gastrojejunostomy using an EEA through a gastrotomy (Nguyen, University of California-Davis; Scott, University of Texas, Southwest) or through the esophagus (Whitgrove and Clark, San Diego). The gastrojejunostomy can also be entirely hand sewn intracorporally with retrocolic-retrogastric limb passage (Higa, Fresno). Still another variant is an antecolic-antegastric limb placement hand sewing (Felix, Fresno) or stapling the gastrojejunostomy (Champion, Atlanta). Of the various methods, the linear stapled and transgastric EEA gastrojejunostomy with retrogastric/retrocolic limb placement are the most commonly performed methods.
